From May 30 to 31, 2023, the "2023 Nickel and Cobalt Industry Chain Conference", hosted by SMM Nonferrous Metals Network and co-organized by Indonesia Nickel Dealers Association and International Nickel Research Organization, was grandly held in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.
There were more than 20 speakers from the Indonesian government and the world at the conference, discussing Indonesia's latest policies, changes in nickel and cobalt pricing mechanisms in China, India and the world, the latest development trends and opportunities in the Indonesian nickel market, nickel product development and the latest smelting technology Hot topics such as Japan's Nippon Steel, Russia's Norris Nickel, Canada's Nickel, Japan's Mitsubishi, Japan's Itochu, Korea's Korya Lead, Ampron Steel, RE TECH, Walsin Lihua, Defang Nano, Tengyuan Cobalt , Guangdong Jiana and more than 300 business representatives from all over the world participated in the event, aiming to analyze the current situation of Indonesia's nickel-cobalt industry chain and look forward to the future development of the industry, so as to promote the sustainable development of China and India in the new energy nickel-cobalt industry .
Global nickel ore can be divided into two categories: laterite nickel ore and nickel sulfide ore. Laterite nickel ore accounts for about 70% of the world, mostly concentrated in countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, New Caledonia and other equatorial regions, with Indonesia accounting for 43% of the world's nickel resources, ranking first. Due to the current economic environment, nickel production will continue to grow strongly in 2023. Preliminary data show that there was a surplus of 51,000 tons in the primary nickel market in the first quarter of 2023, which is the fourth consecutive quarter of surplus, indicating that there will still be a large surplus of nickel production throughout 2023.
The treatment process of laterite nickel ore is mainly divided into fire process and wet process. The more mature wet process is Caron process (reduction roasting ammonia leaching) and HPAL process (High Pressure Acid Leach). caron process pretreatment processes, energy consumption, chemical consumption are larger, the recovery rate is lower compared to the fire process and HPAL process, HPAL process requires high equipment, raw materials containing Mg, Al amount of high requirements, not suitable for large-scale industrial production. The RKEF process is commonly used in the fire process, which mainly includes the main processes of drying, roasting, pre-reduction, electric furnace smelting and refining, etc. The RKEF process has large processing capacity and high production efficiency, but there are also problems such as large slag discharge, high smelting temperature, large coke ratio and high energy consumption in the smelting process. In order to improve the above problems, RE TECH has innovated and developed RE-type oxygen-rich side-blown bath smelting technology to treat laterite nickel ore, with a single production line processing capacity of more than 1 million tons/year and total nickel recovery rate of more than 94%. Compared with the traditional process technology, it has the advantages of low energy consumption cost, low operation cost, high energy utilization rate and high furnace bed energy rate.
The laterite nickel ore treatment technology developed by RE TECH innovation is expected to lead the current surplus of laterite nickel ore preparation nickel-iron alloy industry to the new energy industry transformation, solve the traditional smelting industry smelting high temperature, high energy consumption problems at the same time, the product associated with the new energy industry, help the new energy industry to accelerate the layout of nickel industry, and contribute to the national ecological civilization construction and the implementation of the dual carbon strategy.
